We cannot tell you the current version number, and neither can anyone else

Here is the reason, and it is concrete.

Ten pages of the top host are known to exist from outside. Every one of them returns an error to an automated request — not a redirect, not a missing page, an error on all ten. Nothing outside can read that site. There is no published release page to compare against, no changelog, no store entry to check a number in.

So a version number written on a listing page has nothing to be checked against. It is a number somebody typed next to a file.

Any page that states a current version as fact is either reading it off the same listing you are, or making it up. This one does neither.

What "latest" means on a listing page

It means: this is the newest file we have.

It does not mean: this is the newest file that exists. Catalogues are filled by uploaders. A catalogue's newest file is the newest one that somebody chose to upload there, which can be months behind, and the page has no way to know.

Three listings can each say "latest version" and each mean a different file. All three are being accurate about their own shelf.

Look at what people append:

Two of those are worth stopping on. The one naming a catalogue by name is not looking for the app at all — it is looking for a specific shelf, which is its own entry. The one asking for a latest version for iOS is asking for something that cannot exist, because the file format is Android-only — that entry.

What to do instead of chasing a number

Update in place rather than sideways. An Android update must be signed with the same key as the build already on the phone. If a new file installs over the old one without complaint, it came from whoever made the old one. If it refuses, that refusal is information, and the right response is to stop rather than to uninstall the working copy.

Never uninstall the working version to make a new file fit. This is the step that turns a version question into a loss. The "app must be uninstalled first" prompt means the new file was signed by somebody else.

Read the permission list again on every update. Permissions change between builds. An app that wanted nothing unusual last year can want SMS access this year, and the install screen is the one place it has to say so.

Judge the size, roughly. A build that is a fraction of the size of the one you have is not the same application with a newer number on it.

Some of these searches are not about getting the newest file. They are about getting a specific older one — a build that still works when the current one does not. That is a different question with a worse answer, and it has its own entry.
